This exciting class (new to Claymates!) will explore the theory, crafting, and successful application of glaze. Students will create test tiles, formulate their own test glazes, examine results, and adjust recipes accordingly.
Two weeks of class (classes 3 and 4) will be set aside for construction of work. This time can be used either for hand building or wheel throwing/trimming. Students can create up to 4 pieces to fire. In class 5, different glaze application methods will be demonstrated, and students will glaze the work they created using the glaze tests they made. In the final week, participants will view and discuss their final glazed pieces, and create a batch of their favourite test glaze to take home and keep.
Materials that Claymates will be providing/lending: Disposable KN95 masks, scales, containers, gloves, sieves, all dry materials and clay.
Materials for students to provide: A notebook, an apron or towel. If you already have your own P100 mask, you can use it. If you have any specific mason stains you are interested in using, you can bring them (optional).
Skill level: This class is for continuing students who are familiar with making their own work independently. Since it is a glazing class, fundamental hand building and wheel throwing skills will not be the focus.
Price point: This class has a higher price point than our usual 6-week classes, as it requires more materials, equipment, and coordination to run. Our usual "6-week class" pass does not apply to this class unless the difference is paid; email us for this option.
Cancellation policy:
We require 7 days notice to cancel any class or event. Notice must be given via email. After this point, refunds, credits, and rescheduling are not possible. A $50 administration fee applies to all cancellations, regardless of time frame. If you choose a credit rather than a refund, the admin fee is waived.
Cancellations due to illness or injury:
When you purchase a class, you are taking the risk that you might be sick or injured on the date of your class. While we understand that illness and injury are outside of your control, they are also outside of ours. We are a small business, and we are not able to give refunds or reschedule due to last-minute illness or injury. If you are sick, please do not attend your class. For clay dates, you are welcome to send friends in your place.
Missing classes in a series:
We highly recommend not missing any classes in this series, as each class builds on the last. Makeup classes are not available.
