Beginner wheel

This class covers the fundamentals of wheel throwing, starting with wedging clay, centering, pulling walls, trimming, and eventually decorating and glazing fired work.

Students can expect to take home 4-6 pieces in a 6-week class. All materials and use of studio tools are included. Please provide your own apron or towel. For extra practice, student drop-ins are available on Saturday mornings for $25.

Skill level: This class is for folks who have never tried, or are very new to the pottery wheel.

Cancellation policy:
We require at least 7 days’ notice via email before the first session to cancel or to transfer to another class. After this point, no refunds, credits, or rescheduling are available. A $50 administration fee applies to all cancellations. However, if you choose a credit instead of a refund, this fee is waived. Please note that by registering, you accept the risk that you may be ill or injured on the day of your class. As a small business, we cannot offer refunds or rescheduling for last-minute illness or injury.


Ceramic bubble letters

Get your hands muddy and your creativity flowing in this 2-session special workshop, where you’ll bring your favourite words to life in bold, bubbly ceramic letters! Participants will sculpt chunky letters from solid clay, then hollow, smooth, and paint them with different coloured slips. Claymates staff will finish them off with a glossy clear glaze.

Each ticket is for one student. Students can create 6-8 letters, each one 4-5” tall. All materials and use of studio tools are included. Please provide your own apron or towel. Finished pieces will be available for pickup 6 weeks after your final class.

Skill level: This workshop is for beginners!

Continuing wheel

This class builds on fundamental wheel throwing techniques. What each student learns will depend on their skill level entering the class.  Students may focus on refining their cylinder and mug skills, or move on to bottles and vases, plates, and multi-component forms.

Students can expect to take home 4-6 pieces in a 6-week class. All materials and use of studio tools are included. Please provide your own apron or towel. For extra practice, student drop-ins are available on Saturday mornings for $25.

Skill level: This class is designed for folks who can already throw a small cylinder on their own. We expect a variety of skill levels in this class.

Hand building

In a hand building class, students will explore how to build functional or sculptural objects without using a pottery wheel. Methods taught include pinching, coiling, slab building, using molds, sculpting solid forms and hollowing out, and carving. Glazing is always covered in the last class.

Students can expect to take home 4-6 pieces in a 6-week class. All materials and use of studio tools are included. Please provide your own apron or towel. For extra practice, student drop-ins are available on Saturday mornings for $25.

Skill level: This class is appropriate for all levels; you could be new to clay, or more experienced.
